The Royal Cape Yacht Club and Iate Club do Rio de Janeiro are proud to announce an entry for the Royal Cape Yacht Club’s sailing academy in the Cape To Rio Race 2023. The Academy crew will sail Gryphon, a Simonis 40, led by skipper Sibusiso Sizatu.

It was a slow and light-air start to the inaugural Ocean Race Europe. A fleet of seven VO65s and five IMOCA60s started Leg 1 from Lorient, France headed for Cascais, Portugal.

The Vasco da Gama Ocean Race is the oldest coastal ocean race on the South African sailing calendar. Organised by Point Yacht Club, it was the 25th edition of the race sailing the Durban to East London course. Traditionally sailed from Durban to Maputo, the 50th edition of the Race began on Monday 17th May at 6am, starting a day late due to bad weather.

South African Matt Whitehead was onboard the Swedish/Dutch joint venture, ‘Childhood 1’ in the Prologue of the Ocean Race Europe. The team managed podium places in all three stages, taking the overall victory. All this in preparation for the Ocean Race Europe, which starts on 29 May.

It was a wet and breezy start to the ‘End of Season Cape 31 Regatta’. However, light airs on day 2 provided the teams with a challenge too. The event produced mixed results, but in the end it came down to consistent crew work and clever tactics to secure the podium positions.
