“My brothers came down just before the crossing to Vanuatu. It was really cool for all us to be going somewhere new together with no idea what to expect or what it would be like. That doesn’t happen a lot with the three of us so that part of it was really fun, whether it was figuring out the different reefs we had marked, or exploring between the islands. One thing that surprised us — we were blown away by the surf community here, and how committed they are! It was so inspiring to surf with so many kids who just love surfing for surfing. Every day, every chance they get. That was the highlight for me. If cyclone season didn’t push us out we would’ve stayed a month longer! I’m already excited to go back if we ever get the opportunity”.

“On the crossing to Fiji the wind was 30+ knots and we were pointed straight downwind. The boat would drop in to a swell and then overtake the next one, and that just wouldn’t stop day and night for three days. I’m pretty sure the night watch during that stretch was the most scared Ive ever been. I think I slept less than an hour in three nights. There was a cross chop that we couldn’t see in the dark so we would have to brace for these six foot swells that would just slam into the side of the boat and break over the top of the cabin, and we had no idea when they would come. That wasn’t very fun. But then a week later, we’re surfing all by ourselves, just me, Nate and Ivan figuring out this left we had seen on the charts so I guess it all balances out”.
