Debbie Hathway returns from the 12th CIEL Ferney Trail in Mauritius fired up to be more active next year. And after the 2018 CIEL Ferney Trail, she was determined to enter this year. Extra motivation was the organisers’ introduction of a fun 8km option for those who simply wanted to enjoy a little exercise around one of the most magnificent natural attractions on the southeast coast of Mauritius. The annual event is held in September in the Ferney Valley, a privately owned domain where 200ha is dedicated to the protection and rejuvenation of endangered flora and fauna in some of the last remaining endemic forest on the island. The proceeds are split between La Vallée de Ferney Conservation Trust and Inclusion Mauritius, a group of 12 NGOs working for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

After a busy deadline schedule, I was overdue for a much needed get away. I needed a place where I could switch off from the relentless world that is media. Just once in your life you may be lucky enough to experience a place that is so unique and exclusive, with such raw, natural beauty that it takes your breath away.

What a blast from the past! We hadn’t sailed a Hobie Cat in many years, so ofcourse we jumped at the chance to do so. And boy were we spoilt! Flying along on crystal blue waters, in warm, tropical winds with the mountains of the north of the island as a backdrop – it was a truly memorable experience. And the best part for people used to sailing in icy waters? No wetsuits required – just a bathing suit, a harness and a lifejacket. Now that’s my kind of sailing!
