The Cape to Rio Yacht Race is South Africa’s premier ocean sailing event and the only transatlantic race to take place in the South Atlantic. It has been held roughly every 3 years since 1971. The race is due to start on the 4th and 11th of January 2020 and prizegiving is in Rio on the 2nd of February. The race is organized by the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC). In its original design, it is an ocean race that starts in Cape Town and ends in Rio de Janeiro. The race always takes place in January so that the nish times are around the start of the carnival in Rio de Janeiro . The total length of the race is approximately 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 kilometers) across the Atlantic. It is therefore the longest non-stop sailing competition held in the southern hemisphere.
