MAC 24 – HOUR CHALLENGE 2020
21-22 March 2020

NOTICE OF RACE:
1. DATE AND VENUE
The 24th MAC 24-HOUR CHALLENGE will take place on Saturday 21st of March and Sunday 22nd March 2020 – sailed on Rietvlei, Milnerton starting at 12h00 Saturday and finishing at 12h00 Sunday.
2. REGISTRATION
Registration will take place at MAC Clubhouse on Friday 17h00 to 20h00 and Saturday 08h00 to 10h30.
3. SKIPPER’S BRIEFING
Briefing will be at MAC Clubhouse on Saturday @ 11h00.
4. ORGANIZING AUTHORITY
The challenge will be organised by the Milnerton Aquatic Club.
5. RULES
Challenge will be governed by rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 2017 -2020. Boats participating in this challenge shall conform to the Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS), applicable Class Rules, this Notice of Race, and the Sailing Instructions
6. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Sailing Instructions will be available from the Regatta Secretary on request, on completion of registration formalities and displayed on the official regatta notice board in the main clubhouse. Courses will be indicated in the Sailing Instructions and posted on the Notice board.
7. CLASSES
Challenge is open to :- GP14 (non spinnaker), Enterprise, Mirror, Sonnet (new and/or wooden), Bosun, Pico, RS Q’ba, Topper Topaz (double handed), Dabchick (double handed), 420, and Saldahna Dinghy. Any other class wishing to enter must contact the organising committee for approval.
8. SCRUTINY
Scrutiny of dinghies will be on Saturday 09h00 – 10h45. This is a compulsory sign off requirement for entry to challenge. Bow/Jib adhesive numbers are compulsory and must be displayed, numbers will be issued at registration.
9. SAFETY
A boat is entirely responsible for its own safety – afloat or ashore and nothing reduces that
responsibility. The team manager must be aware of conditions at all times and act accordingly.
Safety / Scrutiny requirements for boats:
§ A container for bailing – secured on board by means of lanyard (market with a permanent marker with sail number)
§ A water resistant torch – secured by means of lanyard lanyard (market with a permanent marker with sail number)
§ A personal flotation device (life jacket) and whistle per sailor
§ Boats shall comply with their class buoyancy and safety requirements.
10. LIABILITY
Competitors participate in the challenge entirely at their own risk. Attention is drawn to the disclaimer on the Challenge Crew list and RRS 4 (Decision to Race). Neither the organizing authority nor its officials or other persons associated with the organization of the event will accept any liability for material damage, or personal injury, or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the challenge.

11. CREW
The 24 Hour Challenge is for boats entering a team. A team name must be provided. A minimum of six or maximum of ten sailors per team. No swapping of team members is allowed without permission from race management. Junior teams may have up to 12 crew.
Saldanha’s must ensure they always have a crew of 3 on board. The age limit for junior teams is 15.

12. TEAM MANAGER
The Team Manager/ Representative will be required to sign off completed laps and discuss penalties during the event.
13. CHANGES TO SAILING RULES
Variations from Racing Rules of Sailing to permit:
§ Use of a reserve boat, sails and gear in the same class
§ Changing of crews and helms with permission from race management (varies Rule 47)
§ Changing of sails
§ Hauling out (varies Rule 45)
§ Towing or manual propulsion to a pre-defined docking area (varies Rule 41 & 42)
§ Outside help (varies Rule 41 & 47)
§ A Penalty Buoy will be used during challenge (varies Rule 44)
14. OVERALL WINNER
The winner will be the boat with the shortest average lap time and the most km’s sailed in 24 hours. (After application of the MAC 24-hour {2020} handicap system.) The relevant class handicaps will be posted on the official Notice Board at registration and throughout the challenge. No queries or protests against these Handicaps will be considered after 18h00 Saturday 21st March 2020.
15. PRIZEGIVING
Prize giving will be held at the Clubhouse at approximately 14h30 on Sunday 22nd March
16. ENTRIES
An entry form per boat must be completed and submitted accompanied by the appropriate
entry fee payable by cheque, cash or bank deposit:
Private teams: Entry fee of R800
Corporate teams: Entry fee of R1500

The galley and bar will be open from Friday through to Sunday, and food trucks will be available
