The Debrief | The Sports Luxe Look

S+L’s Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle editor, Helen Clemson highlights the Sports Luxe trend.

Is the trend for athleisure fashion going away anytime soon? Certainly not in Winter 2020, reports designer Sally Moinet of the Cape Town based fashion label Moinet by Sally Moinet. “Sports luxe is huge for the season and the look is mock-leather (think wax-look) black skinny pants worn with sneakers and a classic coat,” she explains. While you may think these items aren’t quite sailing attire, they do translate into a compact capsule travel wardrobe extremely well. It’s all down to the colour palette, says Moinet. “It’s a traditional toffee one (shades like camel and oatmeal) with checks and blacks added to the mix.” That means all garments complement each other for go-together looks. Think black wax pants, a beautifully-made plain white tee-shirt or matching hued cashmere knit worn under a coat and finished off with white or black leather sneakers (the go-to sneaker shade this winter is black). If you wanted to go more sporty – ideal for colder weather – you could add a hoodie underneath your coat which is also a perfect item to sail with. Or for an evening onshore, swap your athleisure casual top for a dressier, more sophisticated blouse. “In fact, a more sophisticated version of sports luxe style is ditching the hoodie and wearing a blouse instead,” says Moinet. But this is the beauty of athleisure – and why it works so well for sailors who need a very versatile travel wardrobe while onboard; it gives you the choice to go very sporty or more elegant.

Fashion Editor’s Pro Tip: if beige-based hues like camel and biscuit make a yellow-toned skin look even more sallow (or even, dare we say it, lifeless), brighten things up with punchy colours like statement fuchsia and bold coral worn as tee-shirts and hoodies under a classic grey coat instead. You’ll still get the athleisure look but in shades that flatter you better. Keep trousers and accessories in neutral shades (black is the new black this season) for easy travel.
