The Rolex Giraglia is one of the Mediterranean’s most revered and historic sailing events. The event started on the 7th of June, and finishes on the 15th. The Giraglia starts off with a leg from Sanremo to Saint Tropez, followed by a series of inshore races, before the primary event which is an offshore race starting in Saint Tropez and finishing off in Monaco.
Taking line honors just off the Yacht Club de Monaco at 04:35:35 local time was George David’s Rambler, who was first home completing the 241 nautical mile course in 16 hours and 35 seconds. This 88-ft USA maxi came close to beating the seven-year-old race record by finishing a little over an hour behind the time set by Esimit Europa 2 in 2012. SA-based Jan Dekker sailed with the Rambler team.
Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones’s Wallycento Magic Carpet was second over the line, finishing just under 35 minutes behind the line honours winners. By 16:00 on 13 June local time, 33 of the 243-strong fleet had finished the offshore race. And 32 boats retired. The overall race winner will be published on Saturday 15 June.
