One thing the Alex Thomson Racing and the HUGO BOSS campaign has always done is shown us the stylish side to sailing. Who can forget the daring stunt of Alex walking the mast in a Hugo Boss suit, or the infamous Skywalk which shows Alex jumping over the top of the rig with a kite-board, also in an elegant Hugo Boss suit?
Taking things to the next level once more, Alex Thomson Racing introduces the brand new BOSS Sailing Capsule, which includes gear he will wear in the upcoming Vendée Globe race. The capsule is crafted from responsible materials, in line with BOSS’s journey towards a more sustainable approach to fashion.
How involved was Alex?
“The design process actually began around about the same time that we were conceiving the brand identity of the boat itself. So when Industrial Designer Karim Rashid was working with our own team to finalise the colour palette, sail patterns and aesthetic of the HUGO BOSS boat, those decisions were also helping to shape the direction of the Sailing Capsule. The Design and Brand team at BOSS would regularly share concepts with us. We knew the Capsule would not only be made available to buy, but that it would also be our team kit, and so BOSS really listened to our feedback when it came to what we needed as a sailing team”, says Alex.
The eight pieces in the capsule collection, are available in the bright and recognisable colours of the IMOCA, and are made from recycled polyester and organic cotton. The easy-wear designs combine elevated fabrics with functional details. In a pared-back yet striking palette of black, white and neon pink, they are equally suited to a day on the water or to relaxing at home.
Reducing the use of resources to produce these items mirrors the design ethos of the new boat, which skipper Alex Thomson will sail in the 2020 Vendée Globe, which starts in mid-November.
The development of the capsule was inspired by the approach taken by Alex Thomson Racing in the design and build of the new HUGO BOSS yacht. The boat has been created with sustainability in mind: the hull has not been painted but instead has a raw carbon finish, the primary power source is sunlight, and the motor is electric-powered.
“Every item within the Sailing Capsule features in our team kit, which means – for everyone who has asked us when they can buy our kit – now they can. I’m looking forward to seeing lots of our fans in black and pink”, says Alex.
Repurposed for style
The water-resistant raincoat, hoodie, cap and backpack in the capsule are all made from double-faced recycled polyester woven using Social Plastic® yarn from Plastic Bank®. This initiative drives social change by helping stop plastic reaching the ocean, while improving the lives of collector communities.
The iconic BOSS logo T-shirt, polo, knitted beanie and cosy sweater that complete the collection are crafted from cotton sourced from COTTONFORLIFE, which aims to develop and sustain farming of high-quality organic cotton and promote a fully transparent, eco-friendly and socially responsible cotton value chain.
“For BOSS, this Capsule represents another stage in their journey towards a more sustainable approach to fashion. And I could not be prouder to be a part of that journey”.
